Think Better Here

The 5 room productivity machine

Your environment is the #1 factor in your ability to work.

Architect David Dewane created a design for you to be productive as humanely possible.

He calls it a Eudaimonia Machine - Greek for “human flourishing”.

It’s made up of 5 rooms in a specific order.

Room 1: Gallery

This is the entrance, meant to inspire you with displays of past work created in the building.

Room 2: Salon

A relaxed space for conversation and sharing. Here you bounce ideas off colleagues and get your brain working.

Room 3: Library

The library is where you gather research and begin to formulate your ideas.

Room 4: Office

Transitioning into actual work, this is a shared space where you get admin tasks such answering emails out of the way as you prepare for the final room.

Room 5: Chamber

This is where the magic lies. Now that you’re inspired, researched, and engaged, you’re presented with an isolated room designed for you to dive into deep work.

You likely don’t have the space in your house to create a Eudaimonia Machine, so what can you do instead?

A treehouse sketch I found at my grandparents - imagine this was your office!

Dedicate a space for deep work.

Never bring your phone and don’t use it for anything else. Come with a single task in mind. You need to train your brain that in this environment, you’re 100% focused on the 1 thing you want to accomplish.

The space will be even more effective when separated from your home. Think a backyard office, spot at your local library, or a nearby Starbucks.

Reply with your current or dream deep work space! I geek out on these things.

The Treetops

Architecture worth sharing

This book is one of my favourites.

Author and first-time builder Michael Pollan documents his journey of building a writers cabin on his property.

I’m a little jealous. The book made me want to create another backyard office.

Forward this to a friend or family member who will find it valuable!

Reply with the cool projects you’re working on and I just might feature them in The Treetops.

Catch you next Thursday 🫡
